Plumbing Is An Expanding Job Market

A plumber is a skilled laborer who specializes in installing and maintaining the systems needed for potable water, drainage and sewage. Plumbers will work with tubing, pipes, plumbing fixtures as well as things like water heaters. Every developed economy has a plumbing industry, because an important aspect of these areas is clean water access. These jobs are widely available in major population centers.

It was not very wide-spread until the last couple hundred years with the growth and expansion of modern cities. New York City actually had a ban on garbage disposals for several years, but rescinded the ban in 1997.

Professional plumbers are actually extremely well-paid, but the working conditions can be strenuous. For this reason, it is not a profession that generally attracts very many young workers.

If you are interested in becoming trained to work as a plumber, you should have your high school diploma with math and sciences courses, if possible. Shop or vocational training is also very useful. Guidance counselors have this info and can let students know which classes will be beneficial to the trade. It can also be beneficial to shadow a plumber for the day to try to feel out what kind of work will be involved.

Looking online is a good first step to see available opportunities in the area. Many local plumber's unions offer apprenticeships positions lasting 4 years. These include both class time and training on-the-job. These programs are usually very competitive, so back-up options are a good idea. Vocational trade schools offer courses and many will be able to place you in a paid position after completion. Smaller, independent contractors may also offer apprenticeship positions, so it is worth asking. The pay will not be very high, but you'll save tuition money and earn hands-on experience.

The plumbing industry is a healthy job market. Most people are not able to do their own plumbing work, and will have to call in a professional. Opportunities for plumbers will continue to thrive and expand because of remodeling and construction projects of buildings and homes that are always taking place.
