It is really one of the toughest decisions to make in the entire process of relocation. Whether you are moving across town, or across the country, determining whether you should move yourself, or hire a moving company, is a huge task. And there are a number of factors to consider before making the final decision, so you have a lot of questions to ask before hiring a moving company.

When you start thinking about making a move, there are lots of things to consider. Maybe step number one is determining how much you actually have to move. A small move of only a room or two might make it a palatable idea to do all the work yourself, and maybe save a few dollars. But, if you have a huge house with multiple bedrooms and lots of furniture, you really should consider going with the professional movers. Keep in mind, regardless of how much you have to move, if you take the task on your shoulders, instead of paying for a moving company, you need to pay for a truck, gas, and insurance. There are also other costs such as a dolly to move heavy items. Moving blankets, rope, tape, boxes all need to purchased or at least rented, and that certainly will drive your costs skyward.

Another consideration is how far you are going to move. Shifting residences by only a few blocks or miles, it is certainly worth thinking about how you can it alone. But a cross country move is another reason to think about the professionals. A moving company is just that, a company that makes it life out of moving people, so they know what they are doing, how best to pack, and how best to get it from Point A to Point B.

Either way, expect to pay a lot for gas. Of course, in charge of your own relocation means you pay all the fuel charges yourself. By going cross-country with a moving company, there is a good chance your goods will be packed into a big truck with things from another person, at least. That way, the fuel costs on the truck are split up a bit. It is still going to cost a lot, but this way, maybe not quite as much.

Plus, moving a long distance on your own, you will have to pay an extra charge if you rent a truck at one place, and drop it off at another place far away. That is a huge extra cost to take into consideration.

Yet another thing to ponder is your physical well being, and here is where you really need to be honest with yourself. Make certain that you are physically prepared for the beating your body will take. It is going to take a tremendous amount of energy and strength to carry boxes and furniture up and down stairs, down long hallways and sidewalks, to and from the moving truck. The most obvious choice is to draft family and friends. But that in itself gets expensive when you consider how much food and drink everyone will need to get the job done.

The folks you coerce into helping, also, need to be in prime shape. The last thing you want is to get old buddy Billy to help out, and have Billy drop a flat-screen TV down the stairs, or ram a table into the wall at your new place. They will be in charge of the very things that are most important to you, so be absolutely sure the things you are moving will be in good hands.

Maybe the easiest way to decide is to think honestly about when the move is done. After the moving company leaves, all you have to do is unpack. If you and your friends and family do all the work, you still have to unpack. But you also will probably need some ice bags, heating pads and a good Jacuzzi just to recover from the physical toll the move will have on your body. Not to mention all the relationships probably damaged by the stress of the activity.
